“The Russian Educational Center of Minnesota (RECM) is an independent non-profit organization created by collaborative efforts of parent volunteers from the West suburban cities.”
RECM offers classes for children and adults based on teaching strategies used by schools in present-day Russia and adapted for Russian study in the United States. Staff members at the school are an information source for the Minnesota community in areas of Russian culture, traditions and language. They also provide help and support to American families with children adopted from the former Soviet Union, as well as free one-on-one English tutoring for adults and seniors from Russia who don’t speak English.
Most classes offered are designed for children ages 6-18. There are beginning and advanced classes for adults, and there is one class for children ages 3-5 only, “Little Bee,” which teaches the children how to speak Russian through games, singing, drawing and listening to fairy tales.
Classes are held on Saturdays. Offerings include “Little Bee;” beginning, intermediate and advanced Russian Language and Grammar; Literature and Speech (including History and Culture); Music; Russian Art; Intro to Russian Language and Culture for Adults; and an advanced class in Russian Language and Grammar for adults.
Registration begins in May and runs through August for the school year which starts in early September. There are three sessions during the school year, with the last one ending in late May. Students may enroll after the first quarter if openings are available. Tuition is due at the beginning of each session. There is also a summer session available.
