MN Scholars of Distinction in Leadership
MN Scholars of Distinction

The Minnesota Scholars of Distinction award is given to Minnesota high school students who complete required work in Minnesota’s standards, demonstrate mastery of complex subject matter and apply their knowledge and skills on challenging projects. The award was available in the areas of Geography, Math, Science, and Theater Arts. In 2007 the Minnesota Scholars of Distinction program expanded to include a Leadership Award.

High school juniors and seniors who understand what it means to be a leader and who have demonstrated consistent leadership with testimonials may be considered for the award. The criteria for 2007, the first year of the program, included:

  • An essay defining leadership.
  • An annotated bibliography of 20 readings showing a historical look at personal leaders, along with an essay describing your findings.
  • A personal leadership timeline of skill development.
  • A Capstone Leadership Project involving at least 150 hours of commitment, including supporting logs and self evaluation.
  • A public presentation of the Capstone Project.
  • Letters of support from the school and community.

Check the Scholars website (listed above) in November for information about the current year's application and timeline for completion. In 2007, the deadline for letter of intent was March 12th, and the Capstone Project needed to be submitted a month later.
