Minnesota Scholars of Distinction in Science

Grades 9-12

Minnesota Scholars of Distinction in Science is one of the five areas (Science, Applied Geography, Leadership, Mathematics, and Theater Arts) of specialty approved by the Minnesota Department of Education for the Scholars of Distinction program for high school students. This program is intended to encourage students to accomplish high levels of performance beyond the state standards. Cash awards and recognition awards are given to students who successfully fulfill the steps of the program:

  • Students must demonstrate a "substantive knowledge base" in at least biology, chemistry and physics through school grades or AP exam scores of 3 or better.

  • Students write a paper or papers exploring current issues relating to science, technology and society and following the criteria set forth. Written work is evaluated by a local panel of 3 reviewers (one of which must be from outside the student's school) who have competence in science.

  • Students complete a research project using the scientific process and demonstrating rigor. A mentor will be identified to guide the student through the process. A regional review panel (1 mentor, 1 teacher, 1 other - all with expertise in the area of the chosen project) will judge the project.

  • Students need personal endorsement from a teacher or mentor.

High school students who are interested in pursuing this achievement may register from August to March. The application and approval process continue over several months as the student fulfills the criteria, and the student may continue to work on it as long as he/she is in high school.

Registration and further information can be found at the Minnesota Academy of Science website at www.sod.mnmas.org/sodHome.asp
