Young Authors Conference

Oak Point and CMS

Young Authors Conference, sponsored by “Success Beyond the Classroom,” usually happens in late May, although it depends on the availability of the facilities. It is held at Bethel College and lasts for an entire school day. Both the keynote speakers and many of the session instructors are well known by the students as authors and illustrators of popular children’s literature.

Both Oak Point and CMS participate in this program, but they each have their own system for selecting students to go. At Oak Point, students are chosen by staff members, usually two to a classroom. At CMS the signup announcement is in the fall. Each team selects students, although there is a limit as to how many can go. The cost varies depending on the site, and there may be scholarship dollars available.

Children who attend go because they like to write, want to write and may aspire to be writers when they grow up. Past participants have raved about it. It gives them a great opportunity to further explore their creative writing skills, and they especially enjoy sharing their writing with fellow students. If your child is interested, check with the classroom or English teacher for more details.
